Recognized internationally as a superlative performing and
recording artist, a charismatic educator, and a transcriber and
editor of both taste and intelligence, David Tanenbaum is one of the
most admired classical guitarists of his generation.
David Tanenbaum made his debut at the age of sixteen and has
since performed in recitals, masterclasses, and with orchestras
throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, the former
Soviet Union, and Japan, China, and Taiwan. He has been guest
soloist with the London Sinfonietta, Oakland, Omaha, Portland, Long
Beach, and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestras, Germany's ORF Orchester,
and, as guest guitar soloist with The Joffrey Ballet,
with the Chicago, San Francisco, Oregon, and Seattle Symphony
Orchestras. A proponent of chamber music with guitar, he has also
appeared with the Kronos, Chester, and Shanghai Quartets, Steve
Reich and Musicians, and the Ensemble Modern of Frankfurt, while
his festival credentials include those of Bath, Luzern, Frankfurt,
Barcelona, Finland, Hungary, Vancouver, Winnipeg,
Cuernavaca, Mexico, and Carmel and San Luis Obispo, California. In
November, 1995, he was invited by New York City's famed Tisch Center
for the Arts to participate in its 70th Birthday Celebration of
Luciano Berio, a gala program comprised of the composer's complete
Sequenzas for solo instruments. He was also Artistic Director of
the San Francisco Conservatory of Music's "Celebrating Lou
Harrison!", a February 1997 festival of music dance, film, visual
art, poetry, and discussion, honoring the 80th Birthday of this
distinguished American composer. Later that month, he performed
Takemitsu's All in Twilight at a special concert in Tokyo,
commemorating the first anniversary of the composer's death.
Among the many works written for Mr. Tanenbaum are Terry
Riley's Ascencion and Barabas, Hans Werner Henze's guitar
concerto An Eine Aolsharfe, and two works by Aaron Jay Kernis.
He premiered the Henze concerto throughout Europe and the United
States, with the composer conducting. other notable first
performances include the European premieres of Steve Reich's
Electric Counterpoint and the United States premieres of Peter
Maxwell Davies' Sonata and Hill Runes.
David Tanenbaum has recorded the complete Royal Winter Music by Henze for Audiofon
Records; Great American Guitar Solo, an album of music by Curtis-Smith, Currier, Bolcom,
Korde, and Johanson on Neuma; Lute Masterworks, a guitar recording of Bach, Dowland, and
Milano, on Innova Digital Archive; Estudios, a double CD of studies by Sor, Carcassi and
Brouwer on GSP; and Henze's An Eine Aolsharfe on Deutsche Harmonia Mundi. New Albion
has released the critically acclaimed Acoustic Counterpoint (one of only five classical recordings
included among "The Desert-Isle Top 10011 list compiled by Acoustic Guitar magazine in its
January/February, 1994 issue), The Perilous Chapel, and a bestselling album of the music of
Astor Piazzolla. His latest, David Tanenbaum, with music by Reich, Richmond, Kernis, Riley,
Zappa, and Hovhaness, was released in 1997. He can also be heard on the EMI (with Manuel
Barrueco), Albany, Green Linnett, and Rhino labels.
A recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Martha Baird Rockefeller
Fund, and the California Arts Council, Mr. Tanenbaum was an Affiliate Artist from 1983-88. He is
much in demand for masterclasses at leading universities and conservatories and is currently
Chairman of the Guitar Department at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, which honored him
with its 1995 Outstanding Professor Award.In 1989, he served as
President of the highly successful Second American Classical
Guitar Congress, held at Wake Forest University in North
Carolina. For that Congress, he commissioned five new scores,
including a work for 100 guitars by Henry Brant.
David Tanenbaum has edited The Lou Harrison Guitar Book,
and has long been associated with that composer. He has produced
several editions of guitar music, including The David Tanenbaum
Concert Series available through Guitar Solo Publications.
Recently, he published three books analyzing the etudes of Sor,
Carcassi, and Brouwer to complement his recording of those works.
