Guitarists William Newman and William Ghezzi have been performing
together since
1985. As members of the Philadelphia Guitar Ensemble they
enthusiastically worked to
expand the chamber music repertoire for guitar. They have transcribed
numerous works
for two, three, and four guitars, including pieces by Domenico
Scarlatti, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Maurice Ravel, Antonio Vivaldi, Béla Bartók and many others.
In addition, they have commissioned and premiered new pieces for
guitars by John Binder, Kile Smith, Daniel Nightingale, and Ralph
Voerth. Two of their commissioned works, Fantasia by Jan Krzywicki and
Duo For Two Guitars by Robert Capanna, have been published by the
Theodore Presser Company. In the fall of 1993 the Newman/Ghezzi Duo
premiered "viaje de los damnificados" by Philadelphia composer Daniel
Nightingale at the Philadelphia Art Alliance, where they have been
presenting recitals since 1992. Most recently they have been involved in
a unique collaboration with harpsichordist Marcia Kravis.
They have performed on college campuses, concert series and on radio
and television. Currently their program includes works by Béla Bartók,
Domenico Scarlatti, Leo Brouwer and Guido Santorsola.
