I have at least four weaknesses to which I find it almost
impossible to be without: My wife Joani, good food, fine
scotch and fine guitar music. An evening with all
of them? Cool!
Last January we drove over to Pennsauken, New Jersey for
a dinner concert which was carefully put together by
Vicki Senbertrand. Presenting a concert is risky at best,
just ask our treasurer Brian Egras. But for Vicki to put
together a dinner concert with a relatively unknown guitar
quartet was quite an undertaking. You work on and worry
about all the details and "what if nobody comes". Well
enough came and enjoyed it so that she says she wants to
do it again. Now that's a guitar lover.
We met our friends Megan and Brian (the aforementioned treasurer).
The venue, The Woodbine, is a fifty's-style one-story banquet
facility, with several rooms for functions. This was, in my
opinion, the only drawback of the evening. I had the feeling
that it had been smoked in since the day it was built and had
never been aired out. It could also use a remodeling.
The dinner, a buffet of mostly Italian cuisine, was nicely
prepared, displayed, and served, and the waitstaff was friendly. It was pleasant to be with good friends, sipping wine from an adequately stocked bar and chatting of things trivial.
The concert came shortly after. Another room was set aside
with a makeshift stage with antique floor lamps on each side
to provide an intimate feeling to the room. Quanternaglia
is a Brazilian quartet with one left-handed and three
right-handed guitarists. Their playing was skillful
even if occasionally ragged. Their program was well
balanced, ranging from Toroba to Brouwer, with a section
dedicated to Sérgio Assad, Luigi Boccherini, and Paulo
Bellinati, which gave them a chance to show off their
considerable prowess with Brazilian rhythms. I hope
that Vicki won't give up on the idea of the dinner
concert. It's a good one. Good luck with it.
